Shot Stopping

Shot Stopping and Diving

HomeShot Stopping

Shot-stopping for goalkeepers focuses on making saves consistently by mastering:
Body positioning & balance: Stay centered over your base, stay springy, and get set early so you’re not reaching late.
Read the shot early: Watch the hips/shoulders, arm position, and attacker body shape to anticipate direction and pace.
Clean, repeatable diving mechanics: Push off correctly, keep eyes on the ball, and move in a straight line to reduce awkward saves.
Hands technique: Use proper hand shape (soft/firm depending on the shot), get fingers behind the ball, and secure through contact.
Save types & decision-making: Know when to catch, parry, punch, or block based on height, speed, and traffic in front of you.
Recovery & second-save readiness: After every save, be quick to return to a strong stance for rebounds and follow-up shots.
If you tell me the age/level you coach (youth, HS, club, adult), I can tailor a short drill-based checklist.
